Rebuild What's Broken | Nehemiah 3
In this message, Pastor Brian Mills walks through Nehemiah 3 and shows us what happens when ordinary people say yes to God, stand together, and take their place in His work. God uses willing people to accomplish a God-sized vision. If you’ve ever wondered where you fit in God’s plan, felt unqualified for what He is calling you to do, or needed to rebuild areas of your faith, family, or life, this message is for you. 📖 Scripture: Nehemiah 3:1–32 🎙️ Series: Nehemiah MESSAGE NOTES GOD FIRST | Nehemiah 3:1 The rebuilding started at the Sheep Gate, the place where animals for sacrifice entered Jerusalem. Before rebuilding the walls, the people put their focus back on God. You don’t have to fix everything at once. You have to start at the right place. Begin with Jesus. NOBODY REBUILDS ALONE Throughout Nehemiah 3 we see people working “next to” one another. Priests, goldsmiths, merchants, rulers, families, and ordinary people all took their place on the wall. Vision moves forward when people stand side by side together. WILLINGNESS OVER EXPERTISE Most of the people rebuilding the wall were not professional builders. They simply said yes. Unity is not built on having the most talented people in the room. It is built on willing hearts. GOD RECOGNIZES FAITHFULNESS, NOT STATUS | Nehemiah 3:5 Some of the nobles of Tekoa refused to work, but the people of Tekoa continued serving. Someone else’s NO does not have to become your NO. Never become too important to get your hands dirty for God’s work. FIGHT FOR YOUR HOME | Nehemiah 3:28 The priests repaired the sections of the wall near their own homes. Too many people pour everything into work, success, schedules, and responsibilities while the walls in front of their own homes remain broken. Fight for your marriage. Fight for your children. Fight through prayer. Fight for unity. Keep Jesus at the center. IT ALL COMES BACK TO JESUS | Nehemiah 3:32 Nehemiah 3 begins at the Sheep Gate and ends at the Sheep Gate. The work comes full circle. You can work hard. You can serve well. You can fight for your home. You can take your place on the wall. But ultimately, everything must point back to Jesus. Don't Microwave What God is Cookin' | Nehemiah 2:11-16
Before you try to fix what is broken, take the time to honestly see it. In Nehemiah 2:11–16, Nehemiah arrives in Jerusalem knowing God has called him to rebuild the walls. He has the burden, the authority, and the opportunity to act. But instead of immediately getting to work, Nehemiah slows down. He prays, waits, and personally inspects the damage. There is a lesson in that for all of us: You cannot repair what you will not honestly inspect. We often want God to fix our marriage, family, relationships, circumstances, struggles, or future without allowing Him to show us what is actually broken. We treat symptoms while ignoring what is happening in the heart. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is slow down, get curious, pray, and ask God to help you see clearly. In this message from Nehemiah 2, we learn how to: • Slow down and wait for God’s timing • Examine what is broken before trying to fix it • Keep God’s calling about Him instead of ourselves • Lead with humility, wisdom, and patience • Stop reacting to emotions, assumptions, and other people’s reports • Face the full extent of brokenness in our lives • Steward God-given opportunities faithfully • Trust God during seasons of waiting and preparation • Allow Jesus to heal what we cannot repair ourselves Nehemiah teaches us that urgency does not always mean it is time to act. Sometimes God is doing His deepest work in the waiting. What if the season you keep asking God to hurry is the very season He is using to prepare you for what you have been praying for? Don’t microwave what God is cooking. Before you rush ahead, pray the words of Psalm 139:23–24: “Search me, God, and know my heart… See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” What wall in your life is still torn down? How long will you keep treating the pain instead of allowing God to deal with the heart? Be honest about what is broken. Bring it to Jesus. Let Him begin the work of restoration. Before God Uses You, He Does This | Nehemiah 1
In Nehemiah 1, we meet a man who was far from Jerusalem but exactly where God needed him to be. When Nehemiah hears that Jerusalem is broken and its people are living in disgrace, his heart breaks. He mourns. He fasts. He prays. And eventually, he acts. In this message, we look at what it means to trust that God has placed you where you are on purpose, allow Him to break your heart for what matters, and put action behind the burden He has given you. You may feel far from your purpose, but God may have you standing right next to the opportunity He intends to use. Scripture: Nehemiah 1 God gives the burden. God gives the vision. God opens the doors. Our response is surrender, prayer, and obedience. And for some, the first step is simply to return to God. The biblical call to repent is a call to turn around and come back to Him.

When the Door Opens | Nehemiah 2:1–10
Nehemiah had carried a burden for months. He prayed. He fasted. He waited. But when God finally opened the door, Nehemiah was ready to walk through it. In Nehemiah 2:1–10, we see what happens when prayer meets preparation, when vision meets God’s timing, and when ordinary faithfulness becomes the foundation for extraordinary opportunity. This message challenges us to be faithful with what God has given us today instead of constantly chasing what we want tomorrow. Scripture: Nehemiah 2:1–10 You’ll learn why: • Character creates credibility. • God’s timing matters. • Honor creates influence. • Preparation is an act of faith. • Opposition doesn’t always mean you’re going the wrong direction. • Obedience will cost you something. • Ultimately, only the gracious hand of God can accomplish what we cannot. You have no idea what tomorrow holds, so be faithful with today. Pray. Prepare. Stay faithful. And when God opens the door, be ready to walk through it.
